• · We still have almost 100 families who have not returned their registration materials for the 2012-13 school year. Please return your registration forms as soon as possible. It is important that we have them as we plan for next year.

• · If you know that your child will be attending another school next year, please contact the main office. We can help facilitate the change in schools. We also need the information as we plan for next year.

• The 5^th grade concert is next Thursday evening, May 24^th, at 7:00.

• MAP testing has concluded. Reports will be sent home on May 22^nd.

• Field Day is May 29^th. More information can be found in the Hotline.

• There is no school on May 28^th or June 1^st.

Bus Sign:

Bus Buddies: In this job, a patrol takes a little boy or girl to their bus who has special needs or is told by a teacher they have a bus buddy. Or, if the student is a walker, the patrol takes the child to the “walkers” area where the students’ parent or guardian will pick them up.

Kindergarten: For this job, you come to school early in the morning (8:00 am) to take the kindergartners off the bus.  Then, you watch them until morning announcements, or production studio, is off.  Then, during your lunch recess, you take the kinders onto their buses or to their parents in the “walkers” area and wait for the afternoon kinders to come.

Barricades: In this job, you come to school early in the morning (8:00 am) and get on a vest to stand outside with a barricade until the second bell rings. You do this in the morning and leave 5 minutes before the bell rings to get to the designated spot you are at.

Lunch Barricades:  Lunch Barricades are basically patrols who stand outside with the primary kids for the last couple of minutes of lunch with the barricades blocking off the street so at the end of recess for the kids in the primary grades, the patrols can bring in the barricades.

Stairway Patrols:  For this job, 2 to 3 patrols stand in the stairways (while to kids from all the grades come downstairs) and make sure they stay safe by having them never run up and down the stairs and not yelling at each other. And sometimes even the teachers help out!

Dance Club is a fun activity where you can meet people with the same talents and interest as you.  It is fun and well organized.  Best of all it lets you be original in an appropriate setting.

• Celebrate Learning is tonight! The PTA meeting starts at 6:15 in the gym. Classroom visits start at 6:30 and run until 8:00. This is an informal night where families can drop in at any time. I hope to see you there.

• Registration packets for the 2012-13 school year were mailed home over spring break. Please complete the forms and return to school. Although the deadline was April 13^th, we are still taking registration forms.

• MAP testing started on April 23^rd and runs through May 11^th. Please encourage your children to do their best. Also, please make sure they get plenty of sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast.

• Drop off reminder: Students should not be dropped off at school until after 8:25. There is no adult supervision until that time.

• The Science Fair is Thursday, April 26^th. Students will be viewing projects throughout the day. Parents are invited to view projects from 6:30 – 7:30 on Thursday evening. The participants have worked hard on their projects. Thank you to all the parents who helped support and guide students with their projects.

• Take Your Child to Work Day is Thursday, April 26. All forms are due tomorrow, Wednesday, April 25^th. If your child participates in Take Your Child to Work Day but does not turn in the appropriate forms, the absence will be considered unexcused. • · We need your help! The PTA is currently seeking volunteers for the following executive board positions: President (or co-presidents), 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer. • Drop off reminder: Students who are being dropped off in the morning should not exit their car until they get to the far south driveway entrance. This keeps traffic flowing and students safe.

• Math Night Answers: Many of you wanted to know the answers to the estimation questions displayed at math night. Here they are…

• How long would it take for the candle to burn down completely and extinguish itself? 7 hours and 43 minutes.
  • The closest answer was Emily in room 107 with 7 hours and 39 minutes.

• How many boxes of pasta are needed to stretch across one mile? 9.19 boxes, so 10 boxes would be needed.
  • The closest answer was Sruthi in room 105 with the exact estimate of 10 boxes.

• Part one: What would be heavier: a one-pound box of uncooked pasta or the same one-pound box of pasta that has been cooked? The cooked pasta would be heavier. Part two: How much more would it weigh? 3 pounds more.
  • There was a tie for this one with Makayla in room 206 and Tessa in room 108 both estimating exactly 3 pounds.

Spaghetti and Math Night was a big hit!  We had lots of families come and enjoy good food and challenging math activities.  Families filed into the gym to eat spaghetti and try their luck at the estimation table.  When they were finished eating, students and parents moved throughout the school to participate in a variety of math activities.  It was exciting to see families work together to complete a Pentominoes puzzle, finish a Tangram design, or compete in an online math game.  Spaghetti and Math Night was a huge success!  Here are some thoughts from a few of our guests:

“I really liked everything about Math Night, but my favorite was Tangrams.”  – 3^rd Grade Student

“I loved the idea of Spaghetti and Math Night!  The spaghetti was great and the math was fun!”  – 5^th Grade Student

“The Spaghetti was very yummy.  We loved Bingo!  Great way to learn to identify shapes – even our 3 ½ year old could play!  Geo-blocks were challenging but lots of fun.”  – Parent

“I enjoyed playing tic-tac-toe with my friends!  I enjoyed putting the shapes in the right place.”  – 1^st Grade Student

“My primary level student enjoyed geometry bingo, Pentominoes and Geo-boards.  The hands-on problem solving aspect of these activities was very much a highly motivating factor.”  – Parent
